Ramadan Actions: Be Grateful for Everything

We gave wisdom to Luqmān, and said, “Be grateful to Allah;” and whoever is grateful is, in fact, grateful for his own benefit, and whoever is ungrateful, then Allah is free of all needs, worthy of all praise. (31:12)

The first step to achieve wisdom is that a person should turn to Allah in gratitude, because being grateful only benefits us. Allah is not indeed of our thanking Him, rather it is His law that when we are grateful to Him, He maintains, enriches, and increases us in blessings. Similarly, a lot of times our blessings are taken away from us because of lack of gratitude.

(Recall the time) when your Lord declared, “If you express gratitude, I shall certainly give you more, and if you are ungrateful, then My punishment is severe.” (14:7)

There are three types of gratefulness:

  1. Gratitude of the heart lies in the marifah or consciousness of Allah. When our hearts are constantly aware of Allah, then our hearts are grateful. Things to do: internalize how Allah is Al-Khabeer, All Aware, As-Sami, All-Watchful, and Al-Baseer, All-Seeing; He is always present with us and so we should go about our day with that in mind
  2. Gratitude of the tongue lies in the praise of Allah. Things to do: attribute all praise sent your way towards Allah, verbally utter thanks when you are delighted, do dhikr of Alhumdulillah and other praises of thanks
  3. Gratitude of the limbs lies in the obedience of Allah. The highest level of gratitude is to use our blessings to gain Allah’s pleasure
