A Brief Explanation of The Names of Allah - 5
Al-Hameed
The One who is worthy and deserving of all of the Perfect Praise. He is the One who possesses the best of names, the most perfect of attributes, coupled with the best and most complete actions, for indeed the actions of Allah are based on grace and justice.
There is a difference between hamd and shukr. When we say Allah is Al-Hameed, we say He is worthy of hamd, praise. Shukr is when we thank Allah for the blessings He has blessed upon us, it is more specific. Alhumd- Alhumdulillah is when we praise and thank Allah in a general sense.
Al-Majeed, Al-Kabeer, Al-Adheem, Al-Jaleel, Al-'Afuw, Al-Ghafoor, Al-Ghaffar, At-Tawwaab
Al-Majeed is the Glorious One.
Al-Kabeer is the Great One.
Al-Adheem is the One who is Exalted.
Al-Jaleel is the One who is Noble.
He azza’wa’jal is described with the attributes of glory, grandeur, greatness and magnificence. He is the One who is greater, more exalted, and more magnificent than anything else. He is glorified and magnified in the hearts of His friends, and the close ones, their hearts overflow with His greatness.
When we say ‘Allahu Akbar’ we must realize that Allah is The Great, much greater than anything and everything else. He is not great in His attributes only, but also in His self.
The names of Allah, Al-'Afuw, Al-Ghafoor, Al-Ghaffar, remind us and teach us that our Lord has attributes of forgiveness and pardon. He is the One who is perpetually forgiving, He is the One who forgives all things.
“But whosoever repents after his crime and does righteous good deeds (by obeying Allah), then verily, Allah will pardon him (accept his repentance). Verily, Allah is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful.” (5:39)
Allah loves to forgive His beings. Allah has promised forgiveness to the one who has fulfilled the conditions of repentance, which are to stop committing the sin, feeling sincere regret, asking Allah for forgiveness, and then fulfilling the rights of the one who we have wronged while committing the sin (if applicable). We must not discredit a sin by simply thinking that it is minor, instead we should realize against who we are committing the sin. If there was a king of the earth, and we crossed boundaries, we would be fearful of what punishment the king would subject us to, so why do we not have the same attitude when we think about the King of the kings.
It doesn't matter what we have done, whatever sin it was, we must ask for repentance. And this forgiveness is only exclusive to those who do not commit shirk.
At-Tawwaab, is Oft-Returning. Allah is the One who when we commit a sin puts it in our hearts to feel regret, He guides us to repent, and then accepts our repentance. We wouldn’t have repented had Allah not guided us to repentance, and then when we repent He accepts and forgives us.
