Saying Assalamu Allykum to a complete stranger can be slightly embarrassing, but we must remember that the Salaam is a supplication, it is a Sunnah and whoever says Salaam first gets a higher reward. 

For those living in communities with fewer Muslims, saying Salaam when you come across a fellow Muslim will strengthen your ties with them and make you feel closer.
