Provision for the Seekers: A Brief Study of Selected Ahadith (4)

Calmness and patient deliberation is from Allāh and haste is from Satan. (al-Sunan al-Kubra 20270)

  • Allah is Al-Haleem, The Forbearing. He does not immediately take us into account for the wrongs that we do.

    • Similarly, Allah wishes for us to adorn ourselves with forbearance and calmness. The Prophet (SAW) is our role model, he was a pillar of patience in the face of trials. He was known to be kind, just, and trustworthy, all of which are rooted from having sabr.

  • A person should not rush through their decisions in life, as haste is from shaytan.

  • The instances where haste is allowed:

    • burying the body as soon as possible after death

    • praying salah on time

    • marriage if a proposal comes

    • hajj if one has the means

Narrated Abu Dharr: The Prophet (ﷺ) said: The best of the actions is to love for the sake of Allah and to hate for the sake of Allah. (Sunan Abi Dawud 4599)

  • Taking your natural inclinations and pairing it with good intentions—doing actions for the sake of Allah—leads to rewards

  • Holding your tongue and having patience for the sake of Allah can become a means of entering Jannah. Moreover, depending on the relationship, loving and keeping ties of kinship with someone unpleasant is a means of rewards

  • Hating for the sake of Allah does not mean harming someone physically, mentally, or even financially—as believers, we have a certain decorum to follow

Narrated Ibn `Umar: The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "Oppression will be a darkness on the Day of Resurrection." (Sahih al-Bukhari 2447)

  • Oppression entails two types of zulm: 1) what we do upon ourselves, which is disobeying Allah, rebelling and transgressing the limits set by Him, 2) what we do upon others, which is by not discharging their rights, not upholding their honor, not giving the time, respect and attention they deserve

  • One interpretation of darkness may be literal, which will make it difficult for the believer to cross the pul-e-sirat on the day of judgment. Another interpretation may be in a spiritual sense; the darkness of wrong deeds.

  • Regardless, the oppressor will be held accountable for the oppression they committed
