Translation and Explanation of Surah Al-Humuzah

Assalamu Allykum,

Surah Humazah is a Makki Surah and is nine verses long. It appears in the thirtieth part of the Quran.

1:
Woe to every scorner and mocker

This is a warning for every single person who pokes (backbites), slanders and hurts other people. Who finds faults in other people and is always in search of other people's mistake, and when he finds those mistakes he highlights and exposes them.

A warning for someone who makes fun of people on their way of speech, color or lineage, either by words or actions, either by embarrassing them on their face or behind their backs.

This is worrisome as we do these things in daily life, we do actions without thinking about their consequences.

2:
Who collects wealth and [continuously] counts it.

A warning for him who counts his money over and over again in fear that he may not lose them. He who is lost in the figures, constantly making an effort to increase that amount, he does all this because he loves his wealth, he has an immense love for his money.

This does not mean that counting money to make sure someone made the right payment is wrong.

3:
He thinks that his wealth will make him immortal.

He has gathered up a lot of wealth and saved it up in case any emergency occurs or any calamity befalls him.

Now saving money is not wrong, but not using that money to pay the haqq of Allah and/or his relatives and just storing them in his locker is wrong. The haqq of Allah, the zakat and the haqqof people around him has to be fulfilled.

He thinks that his wealth will make him eternal on the basis that he was a rich man. He believes that his wealth, his money is a solution to every problem, that it will save him.

And his wealth will make him arrogant and in turn cause him to act proudly with others and harm them unnecessarily.

4:
No! He will surely be thrown into the Crusher.

He will be thrown into Hellfire which will consume him. Hellfire is such that no matter how many people are thrown into it, it doesn't get full.

5:
And what can make you know what is the Crusher?

One of the qualities of the Quran is that it motivates a believer by way of asking questions. The Prophet (SAW) too sat amongst his companions and used to question them to attract their attention and then gave them knowledge of various matters.

6:
It is the fire of Allah, [eternally] fuelled,

It has been set ablaze by Allah and therefore it is grand and intense. It is existing and ready, crackling.

7:
Which mounts directed at the hearts

This fire of Hell penetrates through the heart. The heat will consume the flesh and bones and then reach the heart, which is a fatal blow.

This person used to hurt other people, abused them, now he will be abused and hurt.

8:
Indeed, Hellfire will be closed down upon them

The sinners will be locked inside the Hellfire, like how an animal is trapped in a tall cage. Now imagine that cage ablaze and no exit in sight, how would the sinners feel then?

9:
 In extended columns.

They will have chains on their necks and the gates of Hell will be closed. The flames will be rising tall like columns/pillars.
