Translation and Explanation of Surah An-Naba (Part Three)

You can find part one here, and part two here.

And denied Our verses with [emphatic] denial,

They did not only just deny the verses, they completely and totally denied the verses of the Almighty. They did not belive in them even a little bit.

But all things We have enumerated in writing.

As they were doing their actions, Allah (SWT) was recording each part of it, nothing was left out. And the written record will be proof that they wouldn't be able to deny it.

"So taste [the penalty], and never will We increase you except in torment."

Nothing will increase from now on other than punishment. The people in Hell will request for the punishment to be reduced for them, they will even plead to the angels; for their punishments to be reduced by even a single day.

But they will be told 'No, no break for them.'

Indeed, for the righteous is attainment

After Allah (SWT) mentions the punishment of the inhabitants of Hellfire, Allah tells about the rewards of the ones in Jannah. And those who will be in Jannah are Al- Muttaquin.

Al-Mutaquin are those who have taqwa, those who protect themselves/shield themselves from the punishment of that Day and from the anger of Allah, by keeping themselves in check and refraining from that which has been forbidden by the Almighty.

For such people there is success. And place of success is Jannah, where one is safefrom all harm, all pain and will get all that he desires.

They will be successful in their place and in their time.

Earlier, the punishment of Hell had been mentioned and now the rewards of Jannah have been told. This is a common theme in the Quran, where there is bad mentioned, there is good mentioned after or side by side. This is because a person should remain between fear and hope. When ever a person is told about the punishment, he is also consoled by the rewards, which helps us to remain afraid of Hell and hopeful for Heaven.

It is necessary for a person to be aware of the punishment to keep himself in check, and also to be aware of the rewards so that he continuously remains hopeful for Allah's mercy. A person must be like this, or else he will destroy himself by either being in despair (because of fear) or turning too secure (by the amount of Allah's mercy).

Gardens and grapevines

There will be gardens with tall fences which will give privacy to the Al-Mutaqquin

And full-breasted [companions] of equal age

Women of Jannah are being described. They will be perfect in their beauty and their forms, they will be great women, noble in their character, elegant. All will be of the same age, will be beautiful and noble. And there will be no jealousy between the women as they will be equally gifted.

And a full cup.

Anything a person desires, will be given to them. In case of a drink, the cup will be filled to its top, with wine or any other drink that we crave.

No ill speech will they hear therein or any falsehood -

In Jannah, there will be no falsehood spoken or heard as two types of speech cannot be found there. There will only be truthful and sincere speech, and therefore if we want to be a part of the people of Jannah, we must correct our speech today.

There is no space for useless speech in our lives, it is like a noise which we are forces to hear.

There will be nothing like this in Jannah, there will be no lies, rejection or denial. The people of Jannah will be very clean-hearted and will hold no ill in their heart for each other. People will not have to be defensive in their speech and will not feel any need to prove their brilliance.

[As] reward from your Lord, [a generous] gift [made due by] account,

All of this will be a gift from Allah on consideration of the deeds by a person. After the deeds will be calculated, then rewards will be given. It is much like how we gift our siblings presents after they perform good at school or work. But this is all due on based of our good deeds, hence, to deserve greater rewards, we must do greater deeds.

[From] the Lord of the heavens and the earth and whatever is between them, the Most Merciful. They possess not from Him [authority for] speech.

Allah is so grand, so majestic that on the Day of Judgement people will not be able to speak in front of Him. The people will not be able to even raise their eyes, similar to how we remain silent when across an elder, we are usually unable to strike up a conversation as we feel it is inappropriate.

The Day that the Spirit and the angels will stand in rows, they will not speak except for one whom the Most Merciful permits, and he will say what is correct.

And only those who will speak correct/right speech will be allowed to speak by Allah’s permission. All that we will be able to hear would be whispers and the sound of our breathing.

The angels and souls of humans will stand in rows.

That is the True Day; so he who wills may take to his Lord a [way of] return.

The Judgment Day is definite, now it is up to us whether we prepare for it or not, whether we choose to follow the right path or not (it is from Allah’s permission that we turn towards the right, that is why we must pray for guidance.)

We will have to return one day or another, as we had come from Allah and will return to him soon, therefore we will be accountable for what we did. The only thing between our life today and the Hereafter is our death, and as we have no knowledge of when we will die, we have limited time to win the rewards.

Indeed, We have warned you of a near punishment on the Day when a man will observe what his hands have put forth and the disbeliever will say, "Oh, I wish that I were dust!"

Every person will see that day what deeds he had performed, everything that a person had done will be shown to him that Day – the good and the bad, and he will be remorseful and ashamed.

The disbelievers and Satan will regret their whole lives that day, and will wish to have been dust so that he would never had been created and resurrected.
