Translation and Explanation of Surah An-Naba (Part Two)

You can find part one here, and part three here.

12-
And constructed above you seven strong [heavens]

Allah has made above us seven sturdy and firm skies.

13-
And made [therein] a burning lamp

The burning lamp in the sky, the Sun has such immense heat and light that it reaches and brighteners from great distances. It causes light in a room even when the room is shielded with curtains.

14-
And sent down, from the rain clouds, pouring water

It is Allah who sends down rain from heavy rain clouds, which seem to be squeezed like a fruit to give abundant rain.

15-
That We may bring forth thereby grain and vegetation

This abundant rain causes produce to come out of the soil which are grains like barley and wheat. Each drop of water from the sky benefits the earth. It produces grains, fruits, grows leaves and plants, which humans and animals eat.

16-
And gardens of entwined growth.

And there are forests so highly condensed in number that sunlight cannot reach the lower parts of the trees.

Until now, several things have been mentioned in the ayats and all these ayats point to Allah's unlimited powers, which repeatedly prove Allah's supreme power to bring the Judgement Day and Resurrect us.

17-

Indeed, the Day of Judgement is an appointed time

On the day of Judgment, each will be concerned about his own matters/deeds. No one will be bothered about his family, friends or partner. On that day, even the nursing mother will forget the child she was nursing.

Everyone would seem to be in a drunk-like stance, as they would be concerned with only their own self and will be oblivious to those around them.

This is the day of separation, a day which will not discriminate anyone and which cannot be avoided. It is meant to be on a fixed time, and that time is only known to Allah (swt) alone.
(And yet when we are reminded of it, we think that it is so far away)

The people of Jannah and Hell will be separated, and all the present matters which we categorize as grey will be clearly sorted out, leaving no confusion.

This will be the Yaum-ul-Fasl where even an atom's weight of good will be separated from an atom's weight of bad.

18-

The Day the Horn is blown and you will come forth in multitudes,

On that day the trumpet will be blown and people will emerge out of their graves in groups.
Groups of diverse people will be among those whom they had loved and followed in the dunya. Some will be with the martyrs, some with their poet companions and some with the Quran. Those with the Quran will be those who had spent their days and nights with the Quran; reciting it, learning it and implementing it.

Here, the importance of being careful about who we spend our time, is highlighted, as those with whom we are today will be with us on the Last Day.

19-

And the heaven is opened and will become gateways,

On that day, the skies will be open and there will be gateways. The sky we see today is closed, while it will be open on that day, for what purpose, we don't know. But some believe that angels will descend from there

20-

And the mountains are removed and will be [but] a mirage.

The mountains will be set in motion, moving easily and will be like a mirage, as they will turn into nothing and will simply disappear.

This is when man will realize that the dunya was a mirage as well. It was just an illusion, a far away attraction, while the Akhirah is the reality which we denied.

21-

Indeed, Hell has been lying in wait.

Sinners today find one way or another to get out of punishment and trouble, by bribing others or using their powers. But they will not be able to escape hell, as hell is like a waiting room, waiting to catch its habitants.

All of humanity will cross over the blazing hellfire, but the sinners, the transgressors will be caught, swept by hell and taken into the flames.

22-

For the transgressors, a place of return,

This will be an abode, a residence for the sinners who cross all limits, and they won't ever be able to come out of it.

23-

In which they will remain for ages [unending].

Hell is not restricted by any time, it is endless. And the fact that one will not be able to catch a wink of sleep there, (sleep, which is a basic requirement of the body and allows us to escape pain, even for a little while) will cause time to seem even longer and torturous.

24-

They will not taste therein [any] coolness or drink

In the blazing heat of the hellfire, there will be no liquids for the inhabitants to satisfy their thirst. There will be nothing to cause them temporary ease.

25-

Except scalding water and [foul] purulence -

Rather there will either be boiling, scalding water or ice cold pus and blood, which will be smelly and disgusting to the eyes.

26-

 An appropriate recompense.

This treatment towards the inhabitants of Hell is exactly what they deserve. Allah does not like causing his creations pain, but this treatment is what the sinners had asked for. It is what they had sowed, and then they will have to reap it.

27-

Indeed, they were not expecting an account,

Truth is that the sinners did not truly believe in accounting to Allah. They did not have faith in Allah's promises, and that’s why they had no fear of being accountable for what they did, therefore they kept on doing all that they desired

Those who truly believe that they will be held responsible for what they do, are careful with each word they say and each action they perform.

Translation and Explanation of Surah An-Naba (Part One)

Assalamu Allykum,

This week's surah is Surah An-Naba.

Surah An-Naba is the first Surah of the thirtieth parah of the Quran. The thirtieth parah itself stresses the most regarding preparation for the Akhirah, therefore Surah Naba has such a theme.

1:
About what are they asking one another,

The Surah starts with the people of Makkah, who are either talking amongst each other or mocking and teasing the Prophet Muhammad (SAW) regarding the Day of Judgement.

2:
About the great news -

Naba means an announcement or news. The important news in this context is the news of the Hereafter.

3
That over which they are in disagreement.

The unbelievers of Makkah had different views about the Hereafter and often put forward their own opinions about it. None of their opinions accepted the actual truth regarding the Akhirah preached by the Prophet (SAW).

4:
No! They are going to know.

Allah (SWT) informs the disbelievers that their views are not even close to what the actual truth is. In fact, the disbelievers themselves can't even agree on a single idea themselves regarding the Akhirah.

5
Then, no! They are going to know.

They will definitely get to know the truth soon and their firm attitude towards rejection of the HereAfter will not benefit them.

6:
Have We not made the earth a resting place?

And if you really want to know the truth, then look around you. If your Lord can create such magnificent creations that your eyes can see today, then your Lord can surely create such magnificent creations tomorrow.

Look at the earth you sit on. Is it not laid out widely so that we can carry out our daily tasks on it?

7:
And the mountains as stakes?

Have the mountains not been made nails to hold down the earth and prevent it from moving about?

The earth, soil and mountains are the biggest creations of Allah, and thus, Allah can easily bring the Day of Judgement when He wants. So why is it so hard to believe in the Akhirah?

8:
And We created you in pairs,

It is great miracle itself that a child born from a womb has no control over its gender and that a single womb can give birth to a male and later a female or vice versa. And we have no control over who our spouse has been written in fate.

Both of these points imply to both Muslims and non-Muslims.

Moreover, those born can be of any race and color, and may speak any language. All this has been made by Allah (SWT).

9:
And made your sleep [a means for] rest,

The night has been made for a means of rest when we can and should halt our activities and tasks, similar to how death halts all things. It is been created so that we may recharge our energies and rejuvenate ourselves for the coming day and save ourselves from several diseases which are caused by not sleeping sufficiently.

10:
And made the night as clothing

Furthermore, the night resembles a blanket or a cloth in three ways.  First, it covers the light and allows us to rest in the dark, to give our eyes a rest from the excessive light we in took in the day. To allow us to sleep in peace without the noise of the daytime hustle and bustle.

Second, it gives shelter to all that is happening at night. Most of the sins are committed at night; robbery, theft. It conceals the sins and faults of people.

And third, it resembles the relationship between spouses, who cover each other by concealing the other's faults and shortcoming

Spouses are our closest relationships; emotionally and physically, and because of this, they know all our habits, weaknesses and shortcomings. Therefore, when they choose to ignore each other's shortcomings, like they should, they are grateful for the good they see amongst themselves and remain content.

Their content and happy relationship in turn gives their children an excellent view regarding marriage and causes a gleeful environment for the rest of the family.

11-
And made the day for livelihood

For humans and animals, the daytime is the time to earn livelihood and work. Allah has made such a system that the night is the right time to sleep and the day is the right time to work.

The daytime is radiant, illuminated and ideal for carrying out daily tasks. And therefore the day time has Barakah, especially in the early hours, which in turn causes Barakah in what has been earned.
